River Cats’ outfielder Charles Thomas was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A affiliate Nashville Sounds for catcher J.D. Closser today in a minor league trade.
Thomas came to the Oakland organization from the Atlanta Braves in 2005 as part of the Tim Hudson trade. The 27-year-old batted .259 with the Braves and Athletics, contributing seven home runs and 32 RBI in 113 major league games. The slick-fielding Thomas dazzled Sacramento fans with his glove and range, posting a .986 fielding percentage with five outfield assists in 2006. Thomas was on a six-game hitting streak at the time of the trade, batting .230 with two stolen bases and five RBI on the season for the Cats.
Originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round of the 1998 draft, Closser has played in 160 major league games, all with the Colorado Rockies. Closser was a Double-A All-Star in the Texas League in 2003, and hit .319 with a homerun and 10 RBI in 36 games for the Rockies in 2004. He was batting .188 with two home runs and six RBI in 17 games for the Sounds this year.
